National Geographic Maps has recently acquired the very fine line of Topographic Software previously produced by Wildflower Productions. This provides National Geographic Maps with a quality Topographic Software Product. With National Geographic also being the Parent Company of Trails Illustrated, this gives an additional quality to their product. They now have a quality product, with a quality outdoor recreation aspect (Trails Illustrated) and the National Geographic quality as well. (To take this further, the maps are actual scans of USGS topos.)
National Geographic Maps now has all 50 States available as the TOPO! software. Each State is $99.95. Recently they have also made all of the States available in a MAC version for Macintosh users
National Geographic now has available a 3-D supplement for the Software for even more interesting map views. (But the 3-D Expansion pack DOES require an 8K Video Card to work) The3-D Supplement is only $19.95
TOPO! Software works in conjunction with most Global Positioning Systems but you cannot download the maps into your GPS. You can; however, download your GPS Waypoints and Routes into your computer and they will be apparent on the Computer Screen. You may also develop Routes and Waypoints on the Computer and upload these into your GPS. But again the maps themselves cannot be loaded into the GPS .
Yet another recent addition to the TOPO! Software Line is the Back Roads Explorer program. This is based on the 1:100,000 USGS topos for the entire United States. Back Roads USA is $69.95
And Finally, they also have a GPS Waypoint Manager Program called GPS USA for only $24.95. This program allows you to save waypoints and to use your GPS to plan Cross Country Trips.
All of these Software Programs are extremely easy to use and provides 7.5' detail on the maps and they are exact scans of the USGS Topographic Maps.
The TOPO! line is fairly extensive. The TOPO! Programs for the National Parks are Excellent. And the other areas are not bad either. As you can see below, TOPO! does several National Park Series programs in conjunction with Trails Illustrated. The first one in the Trailsmart Series is "15 Major National Parks of the USA" including: Yosemite, Denali, Hawaii Volcanoes, Yellowstone, Shenandoah, Rocky Mountain, Mt. Rainier, Arches, Grand Canyon, Zion, Glacier, Great Smoky Mountains, Olympic, Grand Teton, and Acadia National Parks. The second in the Series is "National Parks from Texas to Montana" including Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain, Colorado National Monument, Black Canyon of the Gunnison (our newest National Park), Bandelier NM, Carlsbad Caverns, Guadalupe Mountains, Big Bend, and Padre Island National Seashore. Price is $49.95 each. A recent addition is "The National Parks of the Southwest" including Bryce, Zion, Arches, Canyonlands, Saguaro, Organ Pipe, and of course the Grand Canyon. Price is $49.95
For more detailed regional Coverage, TOPO! also does regional recreation map programs like the one shown below for the Grand Canyon, Bryce, and Zion National Parks, and Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and Las Vegas. Price for the Regional Recreation programs are only $49.95 each.
The Regional Series now has a free download to make it work for MAC's. This is available only for the Regional Series and the download will not work on the State Series (Yet!)
Other Regions include Yosemite, San Diego County, Phoenix and Central Arizona, and many more. Please refer to TOPO! website at www.topo.com for a complete list.
The final program shown below is TOPO!GPS. TOPO!GPS is the waypoint manager software that Wildflower Productions produces to go with their software programs. Included with the TrailSmart Series, it is necessary to manipulate your GPS Waypoints and Routes in the Regional Recreation Programs. The Regional Recreation Programs still will allow you to print the maps and routes from your computer, but without TOPO!GPS you cannot download or upload waypoints and routes. Price is $39.95
As a final note, National Geographic thru the company Topics Entertainment now has released software that has EVERY MAP EVER PUBLISHED BY NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE for your home computer. They also have a 3-D Globe for your computer, also by Topics Entertainment.
3-D Globe is $29.95
